Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly battling Manchester United in the race to sign Konrad Laimer from German side RB Leipzig. A player, that the Bundesliga’s website compared to Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante in 2021.

Laimer, 24, has been superb for RB Leipzig since joining the club from Salzburg. Clocking up 146 appearances for the Bundesliga side, the 20-time Austria star has had a hand in 27 goals from the midfield engine room.

His form of late is catching the eye. Laimer is having more of an effect in the final third, scoring five goals and laying on four assists this season alone. It includes a brace, and an assist, against Dortmund on Saturday.

German newspaper Bild report that Spurs and Manchester United are keen – with the player’s current deal expiring in 2023. The Bundesliga’s website did a feature piece in 2021, and claimed he plays a lot like Chelsea’s Kante.

“Like N’Golo Kante. You’ll be hard pressed to find a player who harries as intensively as Laimer, who is also a dab hand at shielding the ball, recycling possession and facilitating counters. ‘Dirty Work’ is his middle name.”

Laimer like Kante? Leipzig star a wonderful signing for Tottenham

Laimer is a top player. As the Bundesliga site states, it is hard to find a midfielder that works as hard as he does. Certainly one that has the quality of Laimer – or Kante. Laimer is not as good as Kante, but he could be.

That is the potential of the pocket-sized workaholic. At 24, he has already surpassed 250 appearances for club and country – meaning he suits what Fabio Paratici wants. Young players, with plenty of experience.

Rodrigo Bentancur is the perfect example of that. Would Laimer start for Spurs? Perhaps not initially. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bentancur compliment eachother well. Leipzig rate him at £25million (BeSoccer).
