Tottenham are battling Chelsea and Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Leicester star Caglar Soyuncu – a player Graeme Souness urged Spurs to sign back in 2020. He has changed agents in order to find a move.

Soyuncu, 26, has endured a difficult season at Leicester despite clocking up 41 appearances for the Foxes. The 45-time Turkey international’s future at Leicester is in doubt, with his £45k-a-week (Spotrac) deal ending in 2023.

Brendan Rodgers is likely to be given the necessary cash in order to freshen up his Leicester side. Selling a couple of his current stars will also help him do that. Youri Tielemans is being linked with the exit door, this summer.

The Mail claim Soyuncu has swapped agents to the well-known Wasserman – who also look after Juventus ace Weston McKennie, another target for Spurs. Tottenham, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are all keeping tabs on him.

Back in 2020, ex-Tottenham man Souness suggested Spurs should be looking at a player like Leicester defender Soyuncu. He raved about his speed and strength, but also praised his willingness to defend the old-fashioned way.

“In terms of potential solutions, I like Caglar Soyuncu at Leicester City very much… (he) is strong, quick and good on the ball but crucially also takes defending seriously,” Souness said, in his column with The Times.

Souness urged Tottenham to sign Soyuncu in 2020: Good addition?

Prior to the 2021-22 campaign, signing Soyuncu from Leicester would have been a solid move. But after a poor campaign, a lack of confidence have creeped into his defending. He has made a number of mistakes.

Spurs have excellent options at centre-back and while Antonio Conte wants to improve his defence – Soyuncu does not. Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies are all better than the Turkey defender.

However, given his contract situation and that Leicester only bought him for £19million (Sun) – a small-ish figure could be agreed.
