Fiorentina striker Giovanni Simeone has been linked with a move to Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur are just one of a number of European heavyweights tracking Fiorentina striker Giovanni Simeone, according to Italian outlet Tuttosport, but is he good enough?
Tuttosport claim, via AS, that Spurs are in the midst of a heated battle to land the 22-year-old striker, who is the son of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone.
Spanish sides Valencia, Villarreal and Sevilla are said to be interested, as are Italian quarter Juventus, AS Roma, Inter Milan and Napoli. But a move to the Premier League could tempt the uncapped Argentinian striker.
Spurs certainly need a striker to act as Harry Kane’s back-up, with Fernando Llorente likely to leave this summer after managing to score only five goals all season. Vincent Janssen’s future is in doubt too, as he remains on loan in Turkey.
But with 13 goals in 35 Serie A appearances, is Simeone really worth fighting for?
The standard of Italy’s top tier is renowned as being lower than the Premier League, but Simeone has still only managed to score a league goal once every 210 minutes. Compare that to Kane, who scores every 104 minutes.
Age is certainly on Simeone’s side, but if Spurs are to challenge for the Premier League trophy next season, they need a striker that can bring the best out of Kane and hit the ground running when the England striker is unable to play.
Unproven in English football and way behind the likes of Ciro Immobile, Mauro Icardi and Paulo Dybala in the Serie A goalscoring rankings, Simeone should be avoided by Spurs unless he is available at a bargain price.
