With the future of Antonio Conte at Tottenham a doubt, Spurs have reportedly lined-up Diego Simeone as a possible replacement if Conte does depart – and if Simeone does join, then Sergio Reguilon might be given a second chance.

Conte is out of contract at the end of the season. Spurs have the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, but they may decide to offer him a new contract. But, Spurs would want Conte’s blessing, whichever way they go.

A report from Italian outlet CMW claims that Conte in fact, is planning an exit. If Spurs are set to lose Conte, then the club will look to bring in Atletico Madrid manager Simeone. CM say Simeone is closer than ever to leaving Atletico.

That is, after Atletico Madrid were knocked out of Europe on Wednesday night, not just the Champions League – but also the Europa League. So, there is a chance Simeone could be in the Tottenham dugout next season.

Such a move may hand 25-year-old Reguilon the chance to resurrect his Tottenham career. Clearly, Simeone is a big fan of Reguilon – Tottenham’s £25million investment. That is a given, after signing Reguilon on loan in the summer.

If Simeone joins Tottenham then Reguilon might be given second chance

Reguilon was never fully trusted by Conte. Joining Spurs in November 2021, Reguilon was used regularly by the Italian before losing his place to Ryan Sessegnon. In the summer, Conte signed Ivan Perisic on a free transfer.

The club have also signed Destiny Udogie, an Italian wonderkid that was sent back on loan to Udinese. Spurs have plenty of options on the left flank. But Sessegnon and Perisic are naturally, wingers. Simeone likes four at the back.

Reguilon is more of a left-back than the aforementioned duo, while Udogie is a wing-back. So, if Simeone does join Spurs and reverts to his trusted system of a four-man defence, then Reguilon may be given a second chance.

Whether Reguilon will actually impress Simeone while on loan at Atletico remains to be seen. He has been injured only until recently, finally making the matchday squad in Atleti’s last two games – but remaining an unused sub.
