Manchester United were reportedly keen on signing the Tottenham Hotspur defender.

Tottenham’s hopes of keeping hold of Toby Alderweireld this summer appear to have been given a boost, with the Independent reporting that Manchester United are lining up a move for Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar.

The Spurs defender is a key target for the Red Devils this summer, according to the Sun, who claim that United are willing to spend £50 million in order to bring the Belgian to Old Trafford.

Alderweireld joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £11.5 million, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of the continent’s finest central defenders.

Davinson Sanchez’s rise to prominence last season made it easier for Spurs fans to picture life without the 29-year-old, however, and if the Lilywhites do in fact receive a mega offer for him, they will more than likely be prepared to do business.

The Independent claim that whilst Jose Mourinho is still interested in Alderweireld, he has switched his focus to Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar.

There is still a long way to go before the transfer window slams shut, however, and Tottenham fans will still be concerned at the prospect of losing one of their best players this summer.
