Steven Bergwijn was already a popular player among Tottenham Hotspur fans.
The Dutchman scored a worldie on his debut against Manchester City in January, instantly endearing himself to supporters of the North London club, and also bagged other important goals during the second half of last season.
But it’s safe to say that Tottenham fans will love him even more now.
Donny van de Beek joined Manchester United in a £35 million deal this week.
And the player, speaking to media after the Netherlands’ 1-0 win over Poland, revealed that Bergwijn texted to ask him if he was going to join Spurs, amid speculation from Sport that Jose Mourinho had made contact with Ajax about signing him.
Van de Beek said to Destentor: “This was really the time to go. That’s why I was only on the phone with my manager last weekend. In the end there was an agreement. Steven Bergwijn texted me whether I would still play at the Spurs. But I chose United.”
The fact that Bergwijn is trying to recruit players for Tottenham is admirable and suggests he’s committed to Mourinho’s project.
It must be noted that the Lilywhites were already linked with a move for the former Ajax playmaker – who scored against them in the Champions League two seasons ago – so it wasn’t as if Bergwijn is trying to make his own transfer deals happen.
This is a brilliant signing for the Red Devils, but Tottenham fans can feel content in the knowledge that one of their players wanted to get it done for them.
