It’s hard to believe that Tottenham Hotspur, three years and one day ago, was a team that didn’t have Harry Kane at the centre of their side.

The now England International has very much been the superstar in recent campaigns, being at the top of the scoring charts in this and the previous two seasons.

But it was only on April 7 2014 that Kane netted his first league goal for the North Londoners, and the Spurs Twitter account has paid credit to that moment, as the 23-year-old edges closer to a first-team return.

Featuring against Sunderland three years ago – his first Premier League start for Spurs – Kane converted a cross from Christian Eriksen when the score was 1-1, helping wrestle the match into Tottenham’s control and setting them on the path to what was eventually an emphatic 5-1 victory.

Kane had already scored for Spurs as an 18-year-old, netting in a 4-0 away win over Shamrock Rovers in 2011, while the goal against Sunderland was his second of the season after a goal in the League Cup against Hull before Christmas of that campaign.

But it was certainly this strike against Sunderland that changed things for Kane. With the confidence of Tim Sherwood, Kane started four of the remaining five games of the season, and he followed up his first league goal with one in each of his next two matches.

The next season, under Mauricio Pochettino, Kane secured his talismanic status, scoring 31 times. Last year, he netted 28 in all competitions, winning the Premier League Golden Boot at the same time. And this year he would have surely had more than 24 goals, had he not been restricted to just 29 games through injury. 24 in 29 – just say that out loud.

There’s a reason why Tottenham fans love Kane, why they sing that he’s “one of our own”; and today, three years ago, was a pretty important date in forming that romance between player and supporters.
