The Saints defender, expected to line up against Spurs in Wednesday night’s Premier League trip to Wembley, had some kind words for the opposition.
Tottenham Hotspur will get the chance to rectify Sunday’s derby woes against Arsenal by hosting Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.
The visitors are very much a wounded animal at present, sitting in the relegation zone, winless in 10 games and with an interim manager in charge for the game.
History is also kind to Spurs in terms of the fixture, with Saints having won just three of their 19 Premier League visits to Tottenham and keeping just one clean sheet in 27 trips there, as pointed out by BBC Sport.
On top of that, Harry Kane has scored six goals in his last five league games against Southampton, including a hat-trick in last season’s corresponding fixture.
Saints centre-back Maya Yoshida is very much aware of the task facing his team at Wembley and has gone on record to highlight the threat posed by Tottenham.
“They are one of the greatest attacking teams and it will be similar against Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea,” he is quoted by the Daily Echo as saying.
“One small mistake will cost us. Defensively, we have to be solid to restrict them to less opportunities. We have fight, and we will fight with the whole club.”
With Arsenal travelling to Man United on Wednesday night for what is likely to be a tough, atmosphere-charged fixture at Old Trafford, Spurs have a good opportunity to leapfrog their bitter rivals back into the top four.
