Tottenham offer ideal performance amid Roy Keane’s strong criticism

Pundit Roy Keane tore into Tottenham Hotspur last week.

Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, hammering Stoke City 5-1 at Wembley Stadium.

Ryan Shawcross’ own goal put Tottenham in front after 21 minutes, before Mauricio Pochettino’s men ran riot in the second half, starting with Son Heung-min’s goal.

Harry Kane swiftly scored twice before Christian Eriksen made it 5-0, with Shawcross snatching a late consolation for the Potters in a dismal afternoon for Mark Hughes’ men.

Tottenham are now back up to fifth in the Premier League, and back above North London rivals Arsenal, having snapped a torrid run of form with Saturday’s victory.

In their previous four Premier League games since the international break, Spurs had taken just two points, with fans struggling to pinpoint just why Spurs were struggling domestically whilst thriving in the Champions League.

With just two points dropped in six Champions League group stage games, Tottenham have thrived in Europe, but their form in the Premier League has been a concern – particularly for pundit Roy Keane.

Speaking to ITV’s Champions League Highlights Show last week, Keane suggested that Tottenham’s mentality needed to be questioned if they couldn’t get themselves up for Premier League games, suggesting that they needed to ‘sort themselves out’.

“Well that’s a big worry, if they have got carried away, and again you start to maybe question Spurs’ mentality,” said Keane. “They’ve obviously done great work in the Champions League, but for them to slacken off in the league is a big worry. I think some of their players need to step up to the plate and start doing better.”

“At this moment in time, you probably think they’re not strong enough to win the Champions League, but the way they’re going in the league, they won’t be in the Champions League next year, so they’ve got to sort themselves out,” he added.

With Saturday’s win over Stoke, which was convincing to say the least, Tottenham have now responded well to such criticism about their ability to focus on the Premier League over the Champions League – and they must continue that against Brighton on Wednesday night.
