Nuno's first move at Tottenham seems obvious, Ian Cathro will surely join him

Tottenham Hotspur’s lengthy search for a new manager is finally over with Nuno Espirito Santo appointed on Wednesday night.

More than two months on from Jose Mourinho’s exit, one of his former players has now taken the Tottenham job.

Nuno has plenty to do as he settles in at Tottenham, and forming his coaching staff will be the first move.

Nuno reunion with Ian Cathro seems obvious

If Nuno is to bring any of his trusted staff to Tottenham, it would surely be Scottish coach Ian Cathro.

Cathro may have endured a tough time as Hearts manager, but he has enjoyed a fine relationship with Nuno over the years.

This surprise pairing started way back in 2009, as they met at a Scottish FA coaching course. Nuno then made Cathro his assistant at Rio Ave in 2012.

Cathro followed Nuno to Valencia, though they did then go their separate ways for a while until reuniting again at Wolves in 2018.

Cathro always serves as Nuno’s assistant, and their history together suggests another reunion is an obvious move.

Cathro is only 34 but has bags of coaching experience under his belt, as he even worked under Rafael Benitez at Newcastle United.

His poor spell at Hearts hit his reputation, but he could now make one of the biggest moves of his career by heading to Tottenham.

Cathro didn’t have much of a playing career to speak of; he was at Forfar Athletic and Brechin City, but retired in 2009 at the age of just 23.

He has since focused solely on coaching, working brilliantly in tandem with Nuno at three clubs in three different countries.

A fourth club will surely be added to that list soon, with Cathro surely Tottenham-bound after leaving Wolves alongside Nuno.
