Tottenham are now said to be leading the race to sign Matteo Guendouzi – a player who was sold by Arsenal in 2021.

A story from Get French Football News (GFFN) claims that Spurs are the frontrunners to land the France international.

However – if Tottenham are to sign Matteo Guendouzi – they will have to fend off some fierce competition.

What’s the story?

Well, there are many Premier League sides interested in signing the Marseille No.6 this summer.

West Ham – according to The Athletic – are one, while GFFN add that Aston Villa are also keen as Unai Emery targets a reunion with Guendouzi, who he signed for Arsenal.

In fact, it is said that the Villans are also in a very strong position to sign the 24-year-old along with Tottenham, due to the Spaniard’s presence at Villa Park.

Guendouzi has developed into one of the most exciting young midfield talents across Europe since Arsenal sold him to Marseille in a £9m deal back in July 2021.

The Poissy-born playmaker has won seven caps for France as a reward for his efforts, and – according to GFFN – has taken his value up to €32m (£28m).

Guendouzi to Tottenham would be quite the story

If Spurs manage to sign Guendouzi, it would be a remarkable development.

At one point, it seemed as if the Frenchman would be orchestrating Arsenal’s midfield for the next decade, with Ian Wright even telling Premier League Productions that he thinks Emery should have captained the youngster.

The 59-year-old said: “Xhaka should not be captain in front of this guy or Aubameyang, for me.

“He is leading by example for a 20-year-old. We know Tony Adams was a captain at 20, maybe Unai’s not strong enough to give somebody like Guendouzi the captaincy.”

Things turned sour for Guendouzi under Arteta, and he was eventually sold.

It wouldn’t quite be akin to Sol Campbell swapping Tottenham for Arsenal, but if Guendouzi did decide to join Spurs, we are certain it would cause shockwaves at the Emirates Stadium.
