Tottenham and Newcastle are reportedly among the clubs that have opened talks to sign Burnley winger Dwight McNeil – a player Kieran Trippier urged to “stay put” at Burnley back in 2020.

McNeil, 22, has been a regular for Burnley over the last few seasons – already clocking up 147 appearances for Burnley at senior level. In that time, he has clocked up 24 goal involvements, scoring seven and creating 17.

Reports claim that Tottenham and Newcastle are among the clubs that have begun talks to sign the England Under-21 international. Everton, Brentford, West Ham and Fulham are also in the mix for McNeil.

Speaking in 2020, Trippier urged McNeil to remain at his old club. But he explained that he was playing under Sean Dyche, a manager which suits him, and that it was different for Trippier when leaving Burnley as he had been relegated.

“He’s got the right manager to guide him. If I was him, I’d stay put and keep playing games. For somebody like him, who is doing really well, why would you move now? There’s no point,” Trippier said, as per The Mail.

“Just keep performing well on the biggest stage and stay put. I was in a different situation to him, I’d just been relegated so I needed to go to a Premier League club,” Trippier continued, a couple of years ago.

Tottenham and Newcastle have opened McNeil talks

Given Trippier’s comments, his stance will surely have now changed given Dyche has been sacked. Now that Burnley have been relegated, he will also surely agree that a move for McNeil is something he needs to do.

Which club needs him most? Tottenham are likely to bring in a winger with Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura being linked with summer exits. Newcastle need a right winger to start over Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron.

So, it is up to McNeil. Another club, or if it is between Newcastle and Spurs, would he prefer to start for the Toon – or provide cover for Spurs who are in the Champions League? Time will tell.
