Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the Bournemouth right-back.
According to a report from the Express, Tottenham Hotspur are seriously considering Bournemouth’s Adam Smith as a replacement for Kyle Walker if the England international leaves the club this summer, but Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy need to aim much higher than the 26-year-old.
Smith is a decent player who will always give his all and will be desperate to make a second stint in North London considerably more successful than the first. However the Cherries player is not better than Kieran Trippier and Tottenham should be going all out for a player who can help take them to the next level.
While the Yahoo Sports story linking Tottenham with Juventus superstar Dani Alves was always one for the transfer bin, the North London club have also been linked with Monaco’s Djibril Sidibe (Daily Star Sunday) and PSV Eindhoven’s Santiago Arias (AS) and both would be considerably savvier additions, albeit more expensive.
A move for Joel Veltman of Ajax would also go down a storm in North London and the Dutchman’s versatility means he could also cover at centre-back when required.
If Tottenham do sell Walker and sign Smith, they will be weaker, and Pochettino’s side should only be parting company with their best players if they can upgrade.
Levy loves a bargain and Smith would no doubt be that. However, Tottenham should now be regarded as genuine title challengers year in, year out, with their place among Europe’s elite secure for another year in the Champions League.
The time has come to spend money on bigger name players with the right credentials to ensure Tottenham keep moving forward.
Unfortunately for Smith, he is not the answer.
