Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with plenty of players this summer but few are actually what they need.

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a superb campaign last time out, but their manager Mauricio Pochettino will understand the importance of getting it right in the current transfer market to ensure he can build on their second-placed league finish and FA Cup semi-final outing.

Spurs need at least one new quality striker to supplement top-scorer Harry Kane, while an effective wide man is also a necessity with Tottenham falling short in that area for a while.

A new right-back could be required if Kyle Walker leaves North London this summer, yet aside from that Tottenham’s back-line is secure, as is the goalkeeping position with Hugo Lloris the undisputed number one and Michel Vorm having a year left on his current contract.

So why are Spurs regularly linked with centre-backs and goalkeepers, when it is much further forward where they should be focusing?

Already this summer Tottenham have been linked with a whole host of defenders despite the presence of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Cameron Carter-Vickers and, for now at least, Kevin Wimmer.

Then there are the ongoing links with young and often unproven wingers.

Tottenham have made that mistake before, with Clinton N’Jie and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou both struggling to make any kind of impact at White Hart Lane, and when Spurs do bring in a new wide man it should be a player of the calibre of Thomas Lemar; ready to take them to the next level not struggle for minutes.

When you also factor in the ongoing dance regarding Pau Lopez, who would be a third-choice stopper at best if Vorm sees out his contract, either Tottenham are playing the rumour mill perfectly or they are looking in all the wrong places for new additions.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy knows how to strike a deal and it could simply be the case that he is letting the gossip columns lead their readers on a merry – and often contradictory – dance while he conducts his business quietly and effectively.

Tottenham fans will certainly be hoping that is the case, because the alternative is potentially alarming after they sat back and watched Arsenal sign Alexandre Lacazette while Everton snapped up Sandro Ramirez for relative pennies.

In Levy they trust, and the next few weeks will show if the Tottenham supremo brings in the kind of player Pochettino needs now, not a few years down the line.
