Signing Christian Eriksen to a new deal would be a fantastic move by Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham have signed up Harry Kane and Mauricio Pochettino to new contracts recently. And it looks like Spurs are planning to do the same with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, with The Mirror claiming that the Lilywhites hope to tie them down to new deals.

With Eriksen, it could be a fantastic move by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

The Danish playmaker played a starring role in his country’s 2-0 win over Mexico on Saturday, setting up the opener on 71 minutes before scoring the second.

Eriksen had a brilliant 2017-18 season with Spurs and it would surprise nobody to see him emerge as one of the stars of the World Cup over the next month or so.

The former Ajax ace, who scored a hat-trick in the playoff win over the Irish, really is that good, but a new contract safeguards the Premier League club to some extent, and offers added protection.

Eriksen only has two years to run on his existing deal and a glittering display in Russia this summer would undoubtedly see some bigger fish – like, say, the often-linked Barcelona – come sniffing around.

But if Levy signs him up to a new long-term deal then not only does it strengthen Spurs’ stance, but it ensures that rival clubs would have to spend an absolute fortune to sign him. Perhaps he wouldn’t be worth as much as Kane or Alli, but we’re still certainly talking a transfer fee well into the nine-figure region.

Still only 26, Eriksen has plenty of good years left in him, and if another club wants those years then they will have to spend a lot of money to secure them, if Levy gets the extension done.
