Tottenham Hotspur were one of the Premier League sides linked with a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White in 2017.

Despite holding on and securing an important win, one of the main talking points amongst Spurs fans after the full-time whistle on Saturday seemed to be the performance of Morgan Gibbs-White.

Gibbs-White came on for Wolves just after Harry Kane made the score 3-0 to Tottenham at Molineux. And the 18-year-old proceeded to put on a masterful performance that gave Nuno Espirito Santo’s men more than a glimmer of hope in the final stages of the game.

It appeared to be a real breakout performance for the youngster.

But it seems highly likely that his cameo came as absolutely no surprise to Spurs given that they were one of the sides linked with a move for the under-17 World Cup winner just one year ago.

The Sun reported in November 2017 that Mauricio Pochettino’s men were one of the Premier League heavyweights to monitor Gibbs-White’s development, with Liverpool rating the youngster at £5 million.

Wolves, well aware of the talent he possessed, were almost certainly never going to consider an offer for that amount, but Tottenham should still be kicking themselves.

If his performance on Saturday is a sign of things to come, it will probably not be too long before he is deemed to be worth 10 times what Liverpool were prepared to offer 12 months ago.

And with Tottenham seemingly heading into a period of transition with their midfield options, taking a gamble on Gibbs-White during a previous window would have surely been an inspired move.

So perhaps, while Pochettino will be pleased with the three points, he may be somewhat kicking himself over not signing Gibbs-White before his stock really sky-rockets.
