Tottenham were linked with a move for Bruno Fernandes over the summer.

Sporting may have lost Rui Patricio, William Carvalho, Daniel Podence and Rafael Leao over the summer, but they did keep hold of Bruno Fernandes…just about.

After the club’s training ground was invaded by fans, Fernandes terminated his contract like the players above, only to re-sign shortly later after being given improved security.

Fernandes has responded by posting some staggering numbers this term. The 24-year-old has racked up 14 goals and nine assists in 27 games this season having re-established himself as Sporting’s midfield maestro.

The problem now is that Fernandes has been in such good form that he is attracting major interest, and A Bola claim that Everton could launch a €40million (£36million) bid for the Portugal international.

If Everton are interested, and the fee would be considerably less than his €100million release clause, then Tottenham Hotspur should absolutely rekindle their interest in Fernandes.

A Bola had claimed over the summer that Spurs were making final checks on Fernandes ahead of a possible bid, but when he decided to remain with Sporting, those links died.

It’s well-known that Spurs don’t have huge amounts of money to spend, but midfield is one area where Mauricio Pochettino needs to strengthen in 2019.

Fernandes has great versatility, as he can play as a central midfielder or as a number 10, and his technical ability, creativity, set pieces and ability to score from long range would make him additional competition for Christian Eriksen.

A £36million fee would be a smart purchase, and if Everton have serious hopes of signing Fernandes, then Spurs must return with a move of their own.
