Tottenham Hotspur will have to dispel with their current pay structure if they want to keep their best players.

That is according to former Spurs midfielder Danny Murphy, who was speaking as a pundit on Match Of The Day.

When asked by presenter Gary Lineker – a former Tottenham man himself – “If they’ve got superstars will they have to pay what superstars get or lose them?”

Murphy responded: “Yeah. They’re not at the level of City, United and Chelsea are, maybe even Liverpool, in terms of paying wages. They’ve got to make a choice, which is difficult because they’re funding a new stadium as well.”

It was a belief that Kevin Kilbane, who was sitting alongside Murphy on the programme, agreed with saying: “That’s the only way they can compete. They have to break the pay structure at the club and pay these players the money.”

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs have a wage cap at the club that means no first team player will earn more than £100,000-a-week basic pay.

Currently, captain Hugo Lloris is the highest earner at White Hart Lane on that amount, while standout stars this term Harry Kane and Dele Alli earn £80,000 and £60,000-a-week respectively. This is less than half the amount clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United pay their best players.

As Murphy mentioned Tottenham are in the process of building a new stadium, one which will see them play their home matches at Wembley Stadium in 2017/18 as a result.

Yet as their North London rivals Arsenal have found to their cost following their own move to the Emirates Stadium, clubs are at risk of falling well behind their fellow title challengers if they are unwilling to invest in their talent on the pitch.
