Fiorentina’s Serie A centre-back Milenkovic has been linked with a move to the Premier League to replace Toby Alderwiereld at Spurs.
Did Tottenham Hotspur dodge a £30 million bullet during the January transfer window?
With doubts surrounding the future of Toby Alderweireld beyond this season, Mauricio Pochettino could be forced into the transfer market to bring a replacement centre-half to North London in the near future.
And, if reports are to be believed, Fiorentina’s Serbia international Nikola Milenkovic is one of the names on their radar. The Mirror believes that Spurs are big fans of the former FK Partizan man, who is understood to be valued at £30 million (Corriere dello Sport).
But is Milenkovic ready to make the step up in his career?
He has certainly impressed in Serie A but, at the age of just 21, he could be better served continuing his development under the highly-rated coach Stefano Piolo at Fiorentina.
Juventus, after all, clearly believe that Milenkovic is not ready to seize his chance at the top level. Calciomercato claims that the defender has admirers in Turin but Juve believe that he is not yet at the required level to join a club of their standards.
But that does not necessarily mean that Tottenham should take the same stance.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino is one of the best around when it comes to helping young players realise their potential after all, turning the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Heung Min-Son into genuinely world-renowned talents since he arrived in North London.
Juventus are not prepared to wait for Milenkovic to develop so maybe it is Spurs, under Pochettino, who are the perfect environment for a player who could soon be worth far more than £30 million.
