Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly interested in buying Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele throughout the entire summer transfer window, but failed to make a single signing. Now, they have permanently missed out on the Frenchman.

French newspaper L’Equipe claimed that Spurs wanted 21-year-old Ndombele after an excellent season on loan at Lyon from Ligue 1 side Amiens, in which a clause was inserted to make the deal permanent by obligation this summer.

He was one of the first names on the team sheet for Lyon last season, clocking up 54 appearances in all competitions and has now agreed a five-year deal with Lyon – ending speculation over his future.

Lyon confirmed the news on their official Twitter account, which will see the 5ft 11in midfielder remain at Lyon until the summer of 2023.

Spurs were considering the France youth international as they look for a long-term replacement for Mousa Dembele, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract and interested clubs from Serie A and China in the summer.

L’Equipe claim Spurs were willing to pay as high as £35million for Ndombele, who is known for his relentless work ethic, intricate array of long and short passing and his ability to marshal the back four.

However, Spurs will now have to look elsewhere for central midfield talent, with Ndombele’s price tag likely to have sky-rocketed following the signing of his new contract.
