Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing Barcelona talent Riqui Puig are over.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo report Puig has finally put pen to paper on a contract extension at Barcelona.

A staggering 100 million Euro release clause (£88m) has been inserted into Puig’s deal.

The Mail reported in mid May that Tottenham were closing in on a move to sign Puig after he had rejected Barcelona’s initial contract offer.

The 18-year-old central midfielder is tipped for a great future at Barcelona, following in the footsteps of Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

The high release clause shows how highly Barcelona rate him, even though he is yet to make his senior debut for the club.

On May 24, Mundo Deportivo reported that Puig had decided against a move to Spurs and would commit to Barcelona, but three weeks have dragged on now to get the contract signed.

For Spurs it is a disappointment, but it was always a long shot to snatch one of Barcelona’s brightest prospects.

Coming close is encouraging, and time will tell just how much they go onto regret not getting a deal over the line.
