Alasdair Gold has suggested that he could still see Harry Winks leaving Tottenham Hotspur even if Mauricio Pochettino does return on Football London’s Periscope channel.
Winks barely featured under Jose Mourinho this season, as he slipped down the pecking order.
Ryan Mason did restore the England international to Tottenham’s starting line-up for their final few games, but his performances were not particularly eye catching.
With Oliver Skipp returning to Tottenham this summer, Winks’ future has been heavily speculated about.
But the potential return of Pochettino makes things even more uncertain, with the Athletic saying Tottenham are in talks.
Winks was a favourite of Pochettino during his first spell at the club, and if the Argentine were to come back there is a feeling that could give the midfielder a new lease of life.
However, Gold has suggested that he believes Winks may still be keen on a new challenge.
“Winks is an interesting one,” he said, when asked about the impact Pochettino’s return could have on several Tottenham players.
“I still have this feeling that Winks might want to go in the summer, just to have something new. A new challenge.
“I always feel he’s more suited to European football. He’s always put in his best performances in the Champions League.
“I wonder if La Liga would suit him a bit better.”
Impact for Spurs
If Winks was to depart Tottenham it would end a long affiliation with the club.
It does feel as if the time may have come for Winks to seek a new challenge, though.
As touched on earlier, Skipp’s performances in the Championship suggest he really could be exceptional, and Tottenham surely won’t want to block his pathway.
Winks’s form has dipped of late, and it is a long time since those days, where he was controlling the midfield against Real Madrid.
Winks clearly is technically able, but his deficiencies have become more and more clear in Tottenham’s line-up.
And cashing in on him may suit all parties, as Spurs look to shake up their squad.
