Michael Owen is backing Tottenham for success in the Champions League and is even predicting a potential run to the semi-finals of the competition.

Tottenham opened their Champions League group stage campaign on Wednesday night, hosting Marseille in North London.

It took a while for Spurs to make the breakthrough – and a red card for Chancel Mbemba certainly helped – but Tottenham did take the win.

Richarlison bagged two headers to give Tottenham all three points over the Ligue 1 side, getting Antonio Conte off to a perfect start.

That gives Tottenham three points, putting them level on points with group rivals Sporting after their hammering of Eintracht Frankfurt.

With this weekend’s game against Manchester City now postponed, Conte will be looking ahead to the Champions League again.

Tottenham travel to Sporting to take on Tottenham on Tuesday evening and would love to make it two wins from two.

Tottenham are certainly expected to make it out of the group stage but what about after that?

Mauricio Pochettino guided Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019 and repeating that feat may be a pipe dream.

Conte would love to take Tottenham far though, especially given previous criticism over his performances in the Champions League.

Pundit Michael Owen is certainly expecting bit things from Tottenham though based on his comments this week.

Owen told BT Sport’s Champions League Tonight that he thinks Tottenham ‘could go far’ in the Champions League.

Owen highlighted Tottenham’s attacking depth, believing they now have a ‘great mix’ with Richarlison joining Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski in the mix.

Owen added that Tottenham will certainly get into the knockout stages but then claimed that a semi-final push could be on the cards for Spurs, stating that Tottenham are ‘going places’.

“That’s a decent forward line now at Tottenham,” said Owen. “They’ve got a great mix, I think they could go far in this competition.”

“I’m certain they will get to the knockout stages. I wouldn’t be surprised if they got to a semi-final. They’re a very good team, they’re a lot better than they were last year, they’ve got a great team, great stadium, great players – that team is going places,” he added.
