Euros fever has well and truly gripped the continent and everyone in England is surely hoping that on Sunday we see Harry Kane lifting his first-ever trophy and England’s first international honour since 1966.
Kane winning the Euros as England captain would mean that Spurs employ both the World Cup-winning captain and Euros-winning captain, and that’s an incredibly rare set in football.
Away from players such as Franz Beckenbauer, Iker Casillas and Didier Deschamps, who of course were simultaneously the Euros and World Cup-winning captains due to West Germany, Spain and France’s back-to-back wins in the early 1970s, late 1990s and early 2010s, this is a feat that has rarely been achieved.
By our calculations, the only team that have been able to boast the reigning World Cup-winning captain and the reigning Euros winning captain in the same squad was Real Madrid in the 2008/09 season when they had Fabio Cannavaro and Iker Casillas in the same squad.
Juventus came close, but Dino Zoff’s retirement in 1983 meant that he didn’t cross paths with Michel Platini as a Euros winning captain after France’s triumph in 1984.
Spurs could become only the second club in history to employ two players who are the reigning champion captains of the game’s two biggest international honours in the shape of Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.
England need to win on Sunday for this to be the case, but Spurs are on the brink of a very rare achievement.
Of course, questions have to be asked as to why Spurs are continuing to go without winning domestic honours when they can boast the likes of Lloris and Kane who are two of the best players in the world on the international stage.
