Tottenham could sell Matt Doherty this summer despite his enjoying something of a renaissance under Antonio Conte.

Tottenham have already landed one signing this summer having snapped up Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan last week..

Perisic arrives on a free transfer from Inter Milan and will likely start next season as Conte’s first-choice left wing back.

What happens at right wing back is a little less clear though as Tottenham have one key target in mind and two current options.

Tottenham could sell Matt Doherty

Emerson Royal didn’t exactly impress in his first season at Tottenham and doesn’t look a natural fit as a wing back.

Matt Doherty was in great form as he enjoyed a real renaissance under Conte, bagging three assists and two goals in 10 games.

An injury against Aston Villa in April ended Doherty’s season and his rise to prominence though.

The Express now claim that Tottenham are ramping up their £15million move to sign Middlesbrough wing back Djed Spence.

It looks like Spence will be coming in soon and many will expect Emerson to be leaving to make room for the English man.

However, that Express report claims that Tottenham will consider offloading Doherty should Spence arrive.

That will be a surprise to come given that Doherty seemed to have played his way into Conte’s plans.

Conte even suggested that Doherty had ‘improved a lot’ since the Italian took over at Tottenham in November.

Conte seemed very happy with Doherty’s progress and seeing him move on now would be a huge surprise.

Spence has been a quality wing back in the Championship, but that doesn’t change the fact that this would be his first Premier League campaign if he joins Tottenham.

Having an experienced Premier League wing back in Doherty to help him with that adjustment would be ideal, and we know that he can offer more going forward than Emerson.

Doherty looked expendable at one stage but Tottenham now really need to think about keeping the Irishman alongside Spence.
