Marcus Edwards has dazzled for Sporting, getting his career firmly back on track after leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2020.
Tottenham have seen Harry Kane rise through the ranks and become a club legend in a real fairytale story.
The hope is that Oliver Skipp will do the same, and maybe Dane Scarlett in a few years too.
Yet not everybody can emerge as a star through the Tottenham ranks and some have to move on to develop.
Kyle Walker-Peters is one such example, and another is Marcus Edwards, who had to leave England to really kick on.
Marcus Edwards has dazzled for Sporting
Edwards was backed to become an absolute star at Tottenham but it just didn’t happen, with loan moves to Norwich City and Excelsior hardly going well.
Tottenham cut ties with Edwards back in 2019, allowing him to leave permanently for a move to Portugal with Vitoria de Guimaraes.
Edwards started to live up to his early billing with Vitoria, racking up 20 goals and 14 assists in a superb spell there.
Sporting then moved in to take Edwards to Lisbon in January of this year and we already seeing his exceptional quality.
Edwards had bagged five goals and five assists in 20 games before taking on Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The 23-year-old opened the scoring in a 3-0 win for Sporting, sending a left-footed strike beyond Kevin Trapp.
After that goal, co-commentator Scott Minto heaped praise on Edwards, suggesting that the winger was simply the best player on the pitch in Germany.
“He has been the best player on the pitch,” said Minto. “Whenever he has got the ball, you just get the feeling that something is going to happen,” he added.
Edwards then added an assist too, taking his time inside the box before teeing up Francisco Trincao to make it 2-0.
The former Tottenham man was the star of the show for Sporting and if Spurs had any temptation to bring him back to North London, you could hardly blame them.
