Ajax and Netherlands ace De Ligt is believed to be sought after by numerous European clubs.
Dimitar Berbatov believes that Ajax captain – and reported Tottenham Hotspur target – Matthijs de Ligt should be made a priority signing by Manchester United this summer.
According to the Daily Star, Spurs have followed the highly talented 19-year-old centre-back for over a year, but they fear that they will miss out on him as other clubs circle around him.
The Red Devils, meanwhile, have long struggled in central defence and, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges floundering once again, will most likely be on the lookout to bolster that position.
Berbatov, who played for both Tottenham (2006-08) and United (2008-12), has urged the latter club to move for him, claiming that he could provide a solution to their long-term defensive struggles.
In an interview with The Sun, he said: “For a player so young, De Ligt’s performances are incredible. He’s mature, comfortable on the ball, and he is not bothered who he plays against – Ronaldo or whoever. He doesn’t care, he just plays his own game.
“He moves with grace and doesn’t panic on the ball. He has everything you want from a defender. That guy will be an unbelievable player. He’s a great talent and I hope United go for him in the summer and get him.”
The Daily Star report also claimed that De Ligt, who became the only defender ever to win the Golden Boy award last year, has been watched by Bayern Munich, and is wanted by Juventus.
Spurs should be able to get a first-hand look at the Netherlands prodigy – valued at €75million (£65million) according to ESPN – as they face Ajax in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
