Tottenham Hotspur are rivalling Manchester City in the race to sign Derby County goalkeeper Jack Thompson with the teenager already in demand.

That’s according to a report from The Sun, who claim that Derby are already facing a battle to keep hold of Thompson.

The 15-year-old goalkeeper is allegedly considered to be the best English goalkeeping prospect at his age.

Chelsea also fancy signing Thompson but are unable to strike a deal due to the ongoing sanctions placed on Roman Abramovich.

That leaves City and Tottenham leading the race for Thompson as they look to benefit from Derby’s dire financial situation.

A number of talents have left Derby during their struggles, with Kaide Gordon joining Liverpool and Dylan Williams heading to Chelsea.

Striker Omari Kellyman has joined Aston Villa too, with top young talents being snapped up by Premier League vultures.

Thompson could be the next Derby departure but deciding between City and Tottenham won’t be easy for the youngster.

The natural suggestion is that City are far more appealing than Tottenham based on recent history.

Yet with City already having a top young goalkeeper in their ranks in Gavin Bazunu, Thompson needs to think about his first-team pathway.

Tottenham are still searching for their true heir to Hugo Lloris, with nobody currently at the club looking like taking that role in the future.

Thompson may be far too young for first-team action at Tottenham any time soon, but becoming the heir to Lloris sounds more realistic than displacing Ederson.

The summer transfer window is drawing ever closer and it looks like Thompson will have a big decision to make. As things stand, we would back Tottenham as the better option for his development, but money may talk – and City have plenty of it.
