Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a number of managers in wake of Antonio Conte’s departure from N17.

According to the Daily Mail, there are three names doing the rounds at Spurs in terms of who should take the reins.

Daniel Levy reportedly wants to bring Vincent Kompany to Tottenham from Burnley, where he has been excelling.

Meanwhile, a number of Spurs players are said to want Mauricio Pochettino – currently a free agent – back at N17.

The report also claims there is now ‘a faction at the club pushing for a British name such as Graham Potter.’

Would Kompany, Pochettino or Potter suit Tottenham best?

There are arguments for and against all three managers.

Kompany has been outstanding for the Clarets, overhauling their style of play and getting them back into the Premier League.

However, that could also be a double-edged sword as far as Tottenham are concerned.

He could well want at least one season seeing what he can do in the top flight with the Burnley team he helped build.

Expectations would be different between the two clubs too.

Kompany’s expectations at Burnley next season would likely be centred around keeping the club in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Spurs will want Champions League football and a trophy, or at least a good cup run.

As for Pochettino, he obviously knows what it takes to shine at Tottenham, having done so between 2014 and 2019.

Him being a free agent also helps.

However, the risk with Pochettino is that he has a legacy at Spurs. And this could be tarnished if things don’t go to plan in his second spell.

And who can say for sure that the issues that culminated in the Argentine getting the sack first-time round aren’t still present?

After all, Antonio Conte reportedly had a wish-list last summer, but ended up getting players he didn’t particularly want instead.

“He craved a top-quality left-sided centre-back (like Alessandro Bastoni, another of his former Inter players). And they instead signed Clement Lenglet on loan,” The Athletic claimed after Conte’s sacking.

“He wanted a world-class right wing-back (even he knew there was no point in asking for Achraf Hakimi). And they ended up with Djed Spence.”

‘Should be among Spurs’ foremost targets’

With that in mind, perhaps Potter would be the best option. He’s Premier League-proven and would get a clean slate at Tottenham.

Two years ago, football.london reported that several Spurs players had been repeatedly impressed by Potter’s Brighton side when they’d come up against them.

Apparently they were open to the club moving for the 47-year-old.

Potter’s style of management also suits Tottenham.

‘With his reputation of espousing attractive, possession-based football and developing young talents, he should be among Spurs’ foremost targets for their head coach,’ analysis site Football Faithful wrote at the time.

And in November, Pep Guardiola said Potter was “one of the best managers from my point of view, we have in this league.”

Potter has the right level of experience and hunger. He’ll surely feel he has something to prove after his Chelsea spell and will want to get trophies on board.
