Inter Milan have reportedly made an informal enquiry to appoint Antonio Conte at the end of the season, with the Tottenham manager expected to leave the club.

According to the Times, the Nerazzurri have been in contact with the Italian coach over a sensational return back to the San Siro, with Conte leaving Inter in 2021 after a disagreement with the board despite leading the club to their first Serie A title in over a decade.

Despite Inter doing quite well under Simone Inzaghi, Conte’s successor, there’s a growing sense that the former Lazio manager could face the sack if Inter end the season poorly. And hiring their most previous title-winner makes sense from the Italian giants.

As per the report, Conte’s future at Tottenham could entirely hinge on if Spurs are able to progress into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, with the north London side facing AC Milan this week with a 1-0 scoreline to overturn in the English capital.

Indeed, with a reported wage of £218,000-a-week, Conte is one of the best-paid managers in all of football, and with the Italian set to leave Tottenham at the end of this season, Inter could make a huge power play by appointing their former coach in the summer.

With Conte seemingly keen on a return to Italy, as well, it isn’t out the question that Inter will make the move to appoint their former manager should the board sack Inzaghi. And such a decision could leave Tottenham with egg all over their face.

Conte’s arrival at Tottenham last season was billed as one of the best decisions the club have made in the Premier League era, with a serial-winner finally being appointed to take Spurs to a new level. However, as we know, this simply hasn’t happen.

Despite some good results and a top-four finish last season, Conte has failed in his mission to win silverware for the north London side club, and the Italian returning to Inter would be nothing short of an embarrassment for Tottenham, who failed to provide the former Chelsea boss with the resources needed to succeed.
