Spurs are in the Champions League final after a dramatic win over Ajax and Sheringham was involved in something similar with Manchester United in the 1999 final.
Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has made a comparison between current Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and iconic Old Trafford manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
On Wednesday, Poch masterminded a superb 3-2 victory over Ajax in their Champions League semi-final second leg, despite being 2-0 down at half time on the night and 3-0 down on aggregate with just 45 minutes left to play.
Matthijs de Ligt’s goal on five minutes and Hakim Ziyech’s 35th-minute contribution left Tottenham with a seemingly insurmountable mountain to climb but Lucas Moura’s hat-trick, the third coming deep into injury time, sealed a victory for the ages.
Indeed, Tottenham’s comeback against Ajax drew some comparisons to when two stoppage-time strikes saw Man United win the Champions League against Bayern Munich, and Sheringham – who played under Fergie – reckons he can see similarities between the two managers involved.
“You look at Sir Alex Ferguson, his will to win and desire to fight until the last minute, that was embedded into our football team at the time and it’s the same with Pochettino,” Sheringham told Love Sport Radio on Thursday.
“(Poch) tells them how he wants them to play, and he demands how he wants them to play and the desire that they show for the manager, the football club and for the each other last night. Just unbelievable scenes. That’s why he was in such an emotional state at the end of the game last night, because it all came together.”
Tottenham will face Liverpool – themselves stagers of a dramatic comeback against Barca the day before, coming back from a 3-0 first-leg deficit to win 4-3 on aggregate – in the Champions League final in Madrid on 1 June.
