Earlier today, Gareth Southgate announced his England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast.

The 51-year-old handed Marc Guéhi a maiden call-up to the senior setup, while also deciding to keep Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings involved.

However, there was no place for Eric Dier, who has been outstanding in recent months under Antonio Conte.

Eric Dier should be furious

In our view, Dier should be furious with Southgate.

Mings is often at fault for the Villans, and even some of the Villa Park faithful will tell you that Ezri Konsa is arguably the better defender.

Throughout his career, Dier has earned 45 caps for England, whereas Mings only has 16 in comparison.

In that respect, the Spurs man may feel slightly betrayed to see Southgate opt for the £20m Aston Villa man instead of him, especially as he’s in better form.

Good news for Tottenham

Regardless of how Dier may be feeling, this is good news for Tottenham.

It means the 28-year-old will get a much deserved rest from matches over the international period, where he can continue to work alongside Conte at Hotspur Way.

Spurs are still firmly in contention to qualify for the Champions League, so having Dier fit and raring to go will be a big boost for the north Londoners.

Now, Conte will just be hoping that Southgate doesn’t see any of his selections suffer an injury, or else Dier may be drafted in.

Hopefully, the Tottenham No.15 will be rewarded when the next international break comes around, but for now, his exclusion will presumably be welcomed by Spurs.
