Bukayo Saka won the player-of-the-match award for his two-goal display as England eased past Iran to win 6-2 on Monday afternoon – and Tottenham striker Harry Kane has given a two-word verdict on the Arsenal wonderkid.
Saka, 21, was the star of the show for England as he nabbed two goals in a huge win for the Three Lions. Jude Bellingham was also excellent, opening the scoring for the Three Lions – his first-ever goal for England at senior level.
Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish also got their names on the score sheet. A superb display from England, even if Gareth Southgate’s men did concede twice. Saka was given the player-of-the-match award.
Speaking after the match in a short video published on Twitter, England skipper Kane – who did not score but laid on two assists for his country – raved about Saka. Putting North London rivalry aside, he said Saka was “on fire”.
Tottenham striker Kane has given verdict on Arsenal wonderkid Saka
What a performance by England, what a performance by Saka. A number of England players were excellent, Kane himself being one of them – even if he failed to score. Raheem Sterling, Luke Shaw and plenty of others were superb.
The win eases the pressure on Southgate’s men. They can now prepare for a tougher game against the United States, with the confidence they have three points on the board – and a +4 goal difference. The confidence of a win, too.
If anything was missing, it was probably a Kane goal – or a clean sheet. But to score six times in a World Cup opener was excellent. Southgate will now be keen to get his players rested and fit for Friday, which will be a tougher fixture.
