Paul Merson has accused Tottenham Hotspur of ‘living in a little dreamland’ after chairman Daniel Levy fired Jose Mourinho, before a Carabao Cup final with Manchester City at Wembley.
Tottenham severed ties with the two-time Champions League winner earlier this week following a 2-2 draw away to Everton last Friday night.
In doing so, Levy denied Mourinho the chance to end Spurs’ 13-year trophy drought ahead of meeting Pep Guardiola’s side tomorrow afternoon.
The Lilywhites’ supremo has placed 29-year-old Ryan Mason in charge of the senior team on an interim basis until the end of the season, with the club’s former midfielder enjoying a 2-1 win over Southampton on Wednesday night as he made history for being the youngest man to oversee a Premier League game.
Even with Tottenham’s stuttering form under the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid coach, the North Londoners surely had more chance of beating Manchester City than they do under a rookie coach with one match under his belt.
And Merson, writing in The Daily Star, has admitted that he was flabbergasted by Levy’s decision.
He said: “Tottenham sacking Jose Mourinho when they did, with the Carabao Cup final coming up, is crazy They’ve not won anything for years and they have a one-off game against Manchester City to win a trophy. If there was one manager who might be able to set a team up to get a result against a team that’s so far better than them, it’s Mourinho. I couldn’t believe it.
“Tottenham live in a little dreamworld of where they should be and what they are. They had some good years under Mauricio Pochettino. But they still didn’t win anything. And they were top of the league not so long ago. They’ve got to be more realistic.”
