Speaking to RTE’s 2FM, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ right-back Matt Doherty has admitted that he doesn’t know if any club wanted to sign him last month, amid speculation about Tottenham Hotspur.

The Irish Independent reported last month that Tottenham were interested in the Wolves right-back.

Doherty, 27, drew a line under the speculation over his future earlier this month by signing a contract extension until 2023.

The Irishman has been sensational for Wanderers this season, and set up the goal which helped Nuno Espirito Santo’s side into the quarter-final of the FA Cup last weekend.

And with Wolves sitting seventh in the Premier League, Doherty is adamant that he wasn’t planning on quitting Molineux in January.

He told RTE’s 2FM: “I’m totally unsure on that,” he said when asked if any club had shown an interest. “There was no interest on my behalf to do that. We’re seventh in the Premier League right now.”

Spurs do need a new right-back, or at least competition for the existing options.

Kieran Trippier has had quite a poor season in comparison to his heroics for England at the World Cup last summer, while Serge Aurier has also been somewhat hit and miss.

It’s a bit of a problem area for Mauricio Pochettino, who needs stability and inconsistency in this position, but it seems neither Trippier or Aurier can provide it.
