This time of the season can breed a lot of euphoria for footballers, but it can also breed utter heartbreak. Just ask Tottenham Hotspur-linked Marcus Thuram.
The 21-year-old striker missed a last-minute penalty for Guingamp in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Rennes. Victory would have kept alive their hopes of avoiding relegation, but missing from 12 yards ultimately led to the French side being demoted into Ligue 2.
Thuram, the son of France legend Lillian, was the picture of devastation at the end, but their relegation may boost Tottenham’s hopes of a cut-price deal.
According to The Sun in January, Spurs scouted the French hitman and with Guingamp guaranteed to be playing in the second tier of French football next season, his value has gone down.
Thuram wasn’t going to fetch huge money anyway, by virtue of the fact that his contract expires next summer.
But this development might allow the North Londoners pick him up for peanuts, if the transfer speculation is genuine that is.
Thuram has netted eight times in 29 Ligue 1 starts this season.
