Hugo Lloris believes Tottenham let their fans down during last night’s Champions League loss to Monaco, and that the supporters deserved more, he has told the Evening Standard.

In front of a record of more than 85,000 at Wembley Stadium, Spurs came up short against their French counterparts, with goals from Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar arriving before Toby Alderweireld halved the deficit just before half time.

Mauricio Pocchetino’s side failed to break Monaco down thereafter, meaning it was to be a sour night in what was the club’s return to the grand stage of European football.

Lloris has expressed to the Evening Standard his disappointment with the team’s performance, saying it was not what the fans expected.

“It’s a privilege to play at Wembley in front of 90,000 fans,” he said.

“The atmosphere was unbelievable but they deserved more from us.

“We need to learn as quick as possible from this game. We still have a chance to go through, there’s five games, but we need to come back quickly.

“It’s our first loss and it’s a big disappointment because there was big expectation. We need to perform well. Today was not enough.”

Despite dominating the game statistically, Tottenham could not find a way past Monaco, as they were given a harsh dose of reality in their maiden Champions League appearance of the season.

The club will want to become more incisive across the pitch in order to survive what will be a tricky group for Pocchetino’s men.
