Jan Vertonghen was brilliant for Tottenham Hotspur last night, despite it being his first game in two months.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Jan Vertonghen hadn’t just come back from a two-month layoff on Wednesday, such was his solid performance against Inter Milan.

Spurs beat the Italian side 1-0 at Wembley last night to keep alive their hopes of reaching the latter stages of the Champions League.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino showed a great deal of faith in Vertonghen to name him in his first XI, considering the Belgian defender hadn’t played since September.

But the veteran centre-back was his usual, reliable self in the Lilywhites’ defence.

Christian Eriksen has claimed many of the post-match plaudits after scoring the goal which gives Pochettino’s side hope of avoiding the Europa League.

But former Tottenham man Graham Roberts has reserved praise for the former Ajax star, calling him a ‘class act’.

Indeed Vertonghen is a classy defender and his return gives Pochettino something of a headache for Sunday’s North London derby at Arsenal.

Does the Argentine continue with the pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Vertonghen, or does he bring back the brilliant Juan Foyth, who was ineligible to play last night?

It’s a huge game, which means it’s a huge decision, but either way Arsenal will find it hard to score.
