Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be chasing RB Leipzig star Konrad Laimer – a player who grew up idolising Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Tottenham signed one midfielder in the January transfer window, luring Rodrigo Betnancur to North London from Juventus.

Bentancur has already formed a promising partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park.

Antonio Conte may still have plans for Harry Winks whilst Pape Matar Sarr will be available for selection too, but Tottenham may still go for another midfielder.

A host of players have been linked with moves to Tottenham and the latest is Leipzig star Laimer.

Bild claim that Tottenham are rivalling Manchester United in the race to sign Laimer this summer.

Ralf Rangnick’s long-standing admiration for Laimer may make United favourites, but Tottenham will now hope to swoop in.

Laimer, fresh off a two-goal showing against Borussia Dortmund over the weekend, could be what Conte wants in midfield.

Quick, all-action and defensively sound, Laimer excels whether it’s in front of the back four, running from box to box or even at right back.

Laimer’s tenacious approach is exactly what Conte fancies in his team, and his former Salzburg coach Adi Hutter praised him as ‘incredibly aggressive’.

Laimer has been likened to N’Golo Kante for his ability to be absolutely everywhere in midfield, but the Austrian admires somebody else.

The 24-year-old has admitted that he grew up loving Steven Gerrard and wanted to be just like the Liverpool legend, who is now in charge at Aston Villa.

Gerrard is one of the greatest midfielders we’ve ever seen in the Premier League, so it’s hard to reach his kind of level.

Laimer has mastered the all-action style, but can’t quite match Gerrard’s goal return – just seven in 103 league games across his career.

Yet if Laimer can become a midfield influence like Gerrard, Tottenham could have a midfielder ideal for Conte’s approach.
