Tottenham Hotspur have shown an interest in re-signing right back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid despite claims he’s close to joining Newcastle United.

Tottenham back in for Trippier

90Min claim that Tottenham have made their first move for Trippier by asking about his availability.

Trippier joined Tottenham from Burnley back in 2015 and spent four years with the club.

Tottenham sold Trippier to Atletico Madrid but now want to bring him back to North London in a shock move.

Antonio Conte does have Emerson Royal, but repeated links to right wing backs suggest that he isn’t entirely convinced and could yet sell Matt Doherty to bring in a new option.

What about Newcastle?

For a while now, it has looked like Newcastle are the favourites to sign Trippier.

Eurosport claim that Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Trippier having sold the vision of the club to the England ace and his camp.

Newcastle would love to make Trippier their first January signing, but Tottenham now offer a major threat.

Tottenham are seeking European football whilst Newcastle are in a relegation battle – so few could blame Trippier for picking his former club.

Trippier and Pochettino in war of words

Trippier’s time at Tottenham ended somewhat acrimoniously after a war of words with Mauricio Pochettino.

Trippier claimed that he was effectively pushed out of the club by Pochettino, with Pochettino claiming this absolutely wasn’t the case.

Pochettino admitted that Trippier tried to clear up the misunderstanding, suggesting his comments were misconstrued.

Pochettino is now with Paris Saint-Germain – despite rumours of a return to Tottenham – and Conte would be hoping to avoid any similar issues.

That lingering memory may put Trippier off, but Tottenham could now push to bring the 31-year-old back next month.
