The Spurs stopper saved his third penalty in a row in the Champions League game against fellow Premier League side Manchester City.
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has admitted that he is not used to saving many penalties during his career in the wake of his recent hat-trick of spot kick saves in big games.
Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium saw Manchester City awarded a spot kick 11 minutes in following a VAR review which penalised Danny Rose after Raheem Sterling’s effort hit his arm in the box.
However, the Spurs custodian guessed correctly to save Sergio Aguero’s effort from 12 yards, and come the half time whistle, the hosts still had their clean sheet intact, courtesy of the France World Cup winner.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side went on to open the scoring – and ultimately winning – through Son Heung-min’s tenacious effort, with Lloris having saved three penalties in a row – against Leicester City, Arsenal and now Man City – to rightful acclaim.
In conversation with the official Tottenham website, the 32-year-old stopper spoke about his penalty save and was modest about what he did, saying he was just happy to have been of service to his team.
“I’m very pleased to save a penalty at this important moment of the game, in front of one of the best strikers in the world. It’s always a good feeling,” said Lloris.
“It’s about confidence, probably. I’m not used to saving many penalties in my career but the good thing is the three penalty saves this season have been very important for the team, so I can only be pleased with that.”
Tottenham are back in action this weekend with Saturday’s Premier League game against Huddersfield Town before travelling to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday for the second leg against Pep Guardiola’s side.
