Tottenham keen to sign ‘real livewire’ subject to £186k-a-week contract bid

Tottenham Hotspur are still keen to battle Inter Milan for Lorenzo Insigne, despite Toronto FC making the Napoli winger a big contractual offer to join on a free transfer next summer.

That’s according to 90min, who report Spurs remain interested in the Italy forward, whose Azzurri deal expires in June. The Premier League outfit have been attentive to the winger’s situation for a while, but now trail Bob Bradley’s Major League Soccer franchise for a deal.

Inter Milan, likewise, admire what Insigne can bring to the San Siro if they can keep him in Serie A. The 30-year-old has spent his entire career so far in Naples after joining his hometown club as a youth. He is also their captain and has made 415 appearances, too.

But Insigne seems bound for MLS and a free transfer to Toronto once his Napoli contract expires in June. Sky Italia report the Reds have offered him a whopping €11.5m-a-season (£186k-a/w), five-year contract. He can also earn a further €4.5m (£3.8m) through bonuses.

Toronto’s proposal blows Napoli’s suggested new deal out of the water, having offered just €3.5m-a-season (£56k-a/w) and €1.5m (£1.2m) bonuses. Insigne joining would also see the Euro 2020 winner become the highest-paid player in MLS history.

Yet despite Toronto’s mammoth offer, Insigne’s agent is still waiting for European offers to materialise given Tottenham and Inter Milan’s interest in a transfer for the Napoli dynamo.

However, no club is likely to match the terms the Reds have tabled to take the forward to BMO Field. Calciomercato.it also report no team has yet made Insigne a rival offer, either.

So, unless Daniel Levy is willing to make Napoli maestro Insigne – who turns 31 in June – one of Tottenham’s highest-paid players, Toronto are likely to win the free transfer race.

Toronto would no doubt be overjoyed to beat Tottenham, Inter Milan and Napoli and get Insigne’s signature on paper, too. He lit up Euro 2020 and has since scored four and assisted five goals in 15 Serie A outings. He also scored 19 goals in 35 last season.

“Insigne is a little livewire,” Arsenal hero Ray Parlour said of Insigne on talkSPORT (06:53, 09/07/21). “He scored a great goal against Belgium. Insigne is a real livewire. He gets on the ball, he runs at you, he is an excellent little player.”
