‘Didn’t realise’: BT Sport pundit suggests Tottenham star showed something new on Tuesday

Rodrigo Bentancur stunned Jermaine Jenas on Tuesday night with the Tottenham Hotspur ace showing a turn of pace against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Tottenham headed off to Germany on Tuesday as they chased a Champions League win over Frankfurt.

Last season’s Europa League winners were a real test for Tottenham though and the two sides cancelled each other out in a 0-0 draw.

Tottenham worked hard and battled admirably, as Antonio Conte would as a bare minimum, but they really lacked quality in the final third.

Tottenham’s front three fell flat in Germany but Conte will be happy with other parts of his team.

For instance, Tottenham’s midfield duo of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur worked tirelessly in the middle of the park.

Bentancur always keeps things ticking over even if is more solid than spectacular in the Tottenham engine room.

The Uruguayan often leaves us wanting a little bit more; sometimes he can be a little safe, which isn’t ideal when his midfield partner isn’t creative either in Hojbjerg.

Bentancur got through his work well on Tuesday night and earned praise from former Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas after the full-time whistle.

Speaking to BT Sport (04/10, 10:10pm), Jenas suggested that Bentancur ‘edged it’ over Hojbjerg as Tottenham’s best midfielder against Frankfurt.

Jenas noted that Bentancur actually showed something he hadn’t seen before having displayed a real turn of pace when driving forced in possession.

Jenas added that he thinks Bentancur has got ‘real quality’ and thought both he and Hojbjerg performed well in Germany.

“I thought him and Hojbjerg were very good but I thought Bentancur just edged it in the midfield area,” said Jenas. “He showed us a burst of pace we didn’t realise he had as well by the way, when he drove forward with the ball. But he’s got real quality with nicks around the corner, it was a good performance from them both.”

The 25-year-old still has so much untapped potential and it’s now down to Conte to get the best out of Bentancur moving forward.

The addition of Yves Bissouma should help push Bentancur on again, and hopefully we see more from him going forward we did against Leicester City last month.
