Jermaine Jenas is backing Tottenham to finish third this season, believing they’re just too far away from Liverpool and Manchester City.

Tottenham sneaked into the top four at the end of last season, securing Champions League qualification.

Arsenal looked to be in the box seat but Tottenham managed to swoop in and pip their North London rivals.

Who knows whether Antonio Conte would have stayed put without that Champions League qualification, but he has certainly been backed.

Tottenham have brought in six summer signings; gone are the days of a summer window without any signings like in 2018!

Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic are in on free transfers whilst Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet has joined on loan.

Djed Spence, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison have arrived in cash deals with Tottenham adding real quality to their squad.

This may not be all about improving Tottenham’s starting XI, but their depth has certainly improved with this transfer window.

The hope is that Tottenham can now really kick on and challenge Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Tottenham finished 21 points behind Liverpool and 22 points behind Manchester City last season.

Those are huge gaps to make up and it’s a big ask for Conte to launch a title challenge this season.

Many pundits are though backing Tottenham to finish third this season, one place higher than last term.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas is one such pundit, telling BBC Sport that Tottenham will finish third.

Jenas explained his prediction, suggesting that Tottenham aren’t ready for a title race because they can’t win 14 games in a row like Liverpool or City can.

Jenas thinks Tottenham can go unbeaten for that long, but not win that many, effectively leaving them in third place.

“Conte’s signings have elevated this team to another level,” said Jenas. “It is all on them whether they can find the performances and the rhythm they found last year, but I am predicting a reasonably comfortable third-placed finish for Spurs.”

“The only reason I am not putting them in the title race is because, unlike City and Liverpool, I am not sure they can go and win 14 or so games in a row. They might stay unbeaten for that long, but I don’t see them going on a run where they win them all,” he added.
