Tottenham Hotspur must look to buy two “world-class” players if they want to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title, according to former Spurs man Jamie O’Hara.
The Lilywhites have enjoyed yet another decent campaign under Mauricio Pochettino this term, having reached the semi-finals of the Champions League following an epic quarter-final tie against Pep Guardiola’s side.
However, it looked as if it would end badly for Tottenham against Man City on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium, with Raheem Sterling’s injury-time goal seemingly consigning Spurs to elimination, only for VAR to overrule the strike for offside.
In the league, meanwhile, Spurs suffered a blip beginning in late February and going all the way through March in which their title hopes collapsed, and at present they are fighting to seal a place in the top four.
The Lilywhites have not signed a player since the January 2018 transfer window amid the investment made into the club’s new stadium, but with the move back to N17 now complete, it is hoped that the purse strings will be loosened for the summer window.
“If you want to compete and contend at the top for the title, you have to spend,” O’Hara, who came through the ranks at Tottenham and was on their books between 2003 and 2011, told Love Sport Radio, as quoted by Goal.com. “That’s just the way it is. World-class players cost money.
“Tottenham have done unbelievably in terms of not signing anyone and still competing – but they haven’t won a trophy. If they really want to stay competing with the Man City’s and Liverpool’s, then they need to spend £100m. I think they need two and if you can’t get two world-class players for £100m, then the game really has gone mad.”
