Tottenham Hotspur hope to have Erik Lamela fit by next season.
Tottenham’s Erik Lamela
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed Erik Lamela will not play again this season.
Lamela has not featured for the club in 2017, despite hopes he could be back by February.
The club have now decided to send the Argentine to undergo surgery in order to speed up his recovery from a hip problem.
Spurs issued a statement on their club website on Wednesday afternoon.
Tottenham’s Erik Lamela during training
The statement reads: “The Argentina international has undergone a comprehensive rehabilitation process following the injury in November.
“The player has achieved a good level of function, however he has been unable to reach the stage required to make a full return to training.
“Therefore, following ongoing extensive consultation with specialists, surgery has been agreed by all as the best course of action. This will result in Erik returning to action next season.”
The statement of course does not clarify whether Lamela will be playing for them, with the winger’s future uncertain.
Yet his surgery will make it more difficult for the winger to clinch a move elsewhere, complicating any medical he would be set to take.
For now though the statement lets fans know where Lamela is up to, and saves head coach Mauricio Pochettino having to explain the situation in his upcoming press conference this weekend.
Many Tottenham fans had given up on the prospect of Lamela featuring again this season by this point, with this now the second of four years he has had at the club which have been wrecked by injury.
