Tottenham Hotspur are holding talks with Sampdoria to change the terms of Harry Winks’ loan transfer. The midfielder moved to Serie A last August but is still yet to make his debut.

That is according to SampNews24, which reports the Stadio Luigi Ferraris outfit wish to re-work the terms of their agreement. They hope to see Spurs agree to cover a larger part of Winks’ salary over the remainder of the term given he is yet to make a single appearance.

An injury has plagued the 26-year-old ever since he arrived in Genoa last summer. But the 10-cap England international is finally now verging on a breakthrough for the Blucerchiati. Winks has resumed team training and could make his maiden outing as soon as Thursday.

Sampdoria face Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia in midweek and may look to afford Winks an appearance. If not, his debut could come in Serie A away to Empoli on Monday or at home to Udinese on Sunday week. But the terms of Winks’ transfer is still a point of discussion.

Sampdoria want Tottenham to pay a larger cut of Winks’ wage through the rest of his loan transfer this season. He featured in a Serie A matchday squad for the first time against SSC Napoli on Sunday as an unused substitute after recovering from surgery on an ankle injury.

Sampdoria can buy Winks from Tottenham at the end of his loan transfer

So, Sampdoria and Tottenham are now discussing a re-working of the terms of Winks’ loan transfer. The Hemel Hempstead native is on a £91k-a-week wage in north London with his contract running until 2024. But he may yet move to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris permanently.

SampNews24 does not mention the Blucerchiati wishing to adapt the terms of their option to buy Winks. Fabrizio Romano reported upon his arrival in Genoa that the Serie A side can keep the Spurs product – who Jan Vertonghen lauded as ‘unbelievable’ – for €25m (£22m).

Antonio Conte let Winks leave Tottenham having pushed the midfielder down his pecking order. He only started 12 of his 24 appearances under the Italian across all competitions in 2021/22. Yves Bissouma then signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for £25m, up to £35m.
