Tottenham icon Erik Thorstvedt has been speaking to Sky Sports about Manchester City and Erling Haaland, after a £51.2m deal was completed.

What’s the story?

Well, the 59-year-old, who made 133 appearances for Spurs, was asked if he thinks his fellow Norwegian will outscore Harry Kane in the Premier League next season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Thorstvedt said: “Harry Kane does other things. Haaland is more of an out-and-out goalscorer, so I’ll go with Haaland to get more goals.”

Now, that might upset some Tottenham fans, but the Norwegian makes a good point.

Kane does do other things, such as dropping deep to link the play and assist his teammates, which obviously means he isn’t always in goalscoring positions.

Haaland, on the other hand, is much less of a playmaker, so he tends to focus his efforts on making runs in behind to score goals.

In our view, if Spurs had a few more creative midfielders, such as Christian Eriksen, Kane’s goalscoring record would be much better under Antonio Conte.

Interestingly, Tottenham are said to be keen on re-signing the Dane.

Tottenham owe Erling Haaland

In our view, Spurs fans owe Haaland their gratitude, as we believe his availability stopped Pep Guardiola from making another bid for Kane.

The 21-year-old was available for just £51.2m as a result of a release clause written into his contract with Borussia Dortmund.

For a player with 85 goals in just 88 games for Borussia Dortmund, that is a bargain.

It comes after Manchester City submitted a bid worth £100m for Kane back in June, which was swiftly rejected by Tottenham (Guardian).

Had Haaland not been available, we feel the Citizens would’ve made another attempt to sign the England international.

However, in smart fashion, Guardiola has decided to spend roughly half of what he offered for Kane on a player who is seven years younger.

It is fantastic business from Manchester City, and it should also mean Kane stays at Tottenham, with no other club likely to be able to afford him.
