Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min discusses ‘shushing’ West Ham United fans after stunning Wembley goal

Son Heung-min had a message for the West Ham United fans after scoring for Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has told The Guardian that West Ham United fans will know why he shushed them in Thursday’s 1-1 draw at Wembley.

After scoring a stunning long-range equaliser to Pedro Obiang’s equally spectacular opener after 84 minutes at Wembley, Son addressed the Hammers fans and put his finger to his lips.

Initial suggestions were that Son was responding to the recent abuse that former Tottenham midfielder Jake Livermore, although never a teammate of the South Korean’s, suffered at the hands of a West Ham supporter during West Bromwich Albion’s match at the London Stadium on Boxing Day.

But it seems there is a more personal explanation to the gesture, as Son was racially abused by a West Ham fan in November, when Tottenham’s rivals were forced to release a statement apologising for the 25-year-old being subjected to sterotypical comments about selling knock-off DVDs.

According to The Guardian, a man identifying himself as a Hammers supporters asked Son if he can get him a copy of the new Planet of the Apes film. “DVDs. You do DVDs. Good copies”, he said, while the player stopped in his car to pose for a photo with another fan near Tottenham’s training ground.

While Son did not reference that incident specifically while explaining his actions to The Guardian, the 10-goal attacker made it clear that West Ham fans should be aware of his reasoning.

“It was nothing special, I don’t want to talk about it,” Son is quoted by The Guardian as saying: “I think they knew why I did it and that’s it.

“I’m living my dream but I can’t believe it. I’m playing Premier League but I’m still very hungry. I’m looking up. I want to be a top player. I think I can still play better. I have a good chance to play even better than this.”

Thirty-one goals since the start of last season has made Son a favourite among the Spurs squad and fanbase, and sticking one to West Ham is only going to make him more popular.
