Thomas Delaney’s fine form for Werder Bremen and Denmark has caught the eye of Spurs – have Everton missed their chance?
Life could hardly be much better for Werder Bremen’s Thomas Delaney at the moment.
Fresh from scoring four goals in two games over the international break, including a hat-trick against Albania, the Danish midfielder hit the back of the net again in a Man of the Match performance against Hertha Berlin at the weekend.
And, to top it all off, Weser Kurier report that the £13.5 million-rated Delaney has caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur.
At the age of 26, the former Copenhagen favourite isn’t the usual youngster Spurs tend to target. However, he is a late bloomer and appears to be improving all the time, currently enjoying the most sustained goalscoring purple patch of his career.
Deadly Delaney
Moussa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier, the three deep lying midfielders at Spurs’ disposal, aren’t exactly renowned for hitting the back of the net so Delaney’s long-range shooting, strength in the air and ability to time runs late into the box stands him out as a player who could offer Mauricio Pochettino something different.
Though Tottenham’s interest only reinforces the feeling that Everton dropped the ball. According to the Liverpool Echo, The Toffees scouted Delaney extensively during his time at Copenhagen but did not follow through on his initial interest, allowing Bremen to agree a £1.5 million and loan him back to the Danish club until January.
However, in the mid-season transfer window, Everton lodged an £8 million bid to lure Delaney from Bremen before he had even made his Bundesliga debut. Even back then, it appeared that The Toffees had realised the error of their ways.
And though a move to Everton may still be on the cards, Delaney’s value is rising ever further and Tottenham appear to have jumped to the front of the queue.
